Professor Ilaria Gorini, Director
Ilaria Gorini held a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Insubria and achieved a PhD in Public Health and Educational Sciences at the University of Pavia. She is Associated Professor of History of Medicine at the University of Insubria and teaches this subject in various degree courses. She also holds the teaching of Archaeobiology in the degree course of Biotechnology and the elective teaching activity of Paleopathology and study of ancient human remains in the School of Medicine. She is a member of the doctoral board of Clinical and Experimental Medicine and Medical Humanities. She has specific interests in the history of natural sciences, also applied to investigations on biological remains
Doctor Omar Larentis, PhD, Coordinator
Omar Larentis acquired a BD (110L/110) in Archaeology (Cultural Heritage) at the University of Trento with a thesis focused on the funerary practices reserved for children during the Middle age starting from the bioarchaeological analysis of a funerary context reserved for the burial of infants. Then he achieved the Master’s Degree (110L/110) in Archaeology (Science for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage) at the Trento University, supporting a thesis on Funerary Archaeology that deal with both the examination of different funerary practises, their function and meaning and the bioarchaeological analysis of a human sample representing the transition between the Gothic and the Carolingian conquest of Italy during the Early Middle Ages. After that he acquired the PhD at the Insubria University with a project on the analysis of the funeral practice and of the anthropological sample of the Italian Iron Age Golasecca Culture. He is also involved as anthropologist in the international Adulis project, Eritrea.
Doctor Chiara Tesi, PhD
Chiara Tesi achieved a Bachelor’s Degree in Sciences of Cultural Heritage with a Medieval Archaeological curriculum at the University of Pisa, supporting a thesis on Funerary Archaeology that dealt with the translation and study of a medieval treatise on the regulation of post-Tridentine burial rules. Following the interest in physical anthropology born during the university studies, she subsequently obtained a postgraduate qualification in Bioarchaeology, Paleopathology and Forensic Anthropology at the University of Bologna. Then she acquired a Master’s Degree in Archaeology at the University of Pisa with a dissertation in Bioarchaeology and Paleopathology concerning the analysis of cremated remains from a Bronze Age/early-Iron Age Tuscan necropolis. Recently, she got a scholarship for the PhD in Clinical and Experimental Medicine and Medical Humanities at the University of Insubria with a project on the study of the human remains from the archaeological medieval site of San Biagio in Cittiglio. She actively collaborates with the Centre in the anthropological and paleopathological study of the human remains retrieved from territorial archaeological sites.
Doctor Roberta Fusco, PhD, scholarship holder
Roberta Fusco, after a Bachelor’s Degree in Archeology and a Master’s Degree in Cultural Anthropology, has obtained a postgraduate qualification in Bioarchaeology, Paleopathology and Forensic Anthropology at the University of Bologna. Subsequently, she attended the two-years training course of the School of Palaeography and Diplomatics at the Milan State Archive and obtained a PhD in Intercultural Humanistic Studies at the University of Bergamo, with an anthropological-historical research on the diffusion of the practice of the double burial in northern Italy during the Modern era. She actively collaborates with the Centre in the anthropological and paleopathological study of human remains recovered from archaeological sites of the territory. Currently, she is the winner of a scholarship for cataloging and studying the material culture of the Archaeological Museum of Villa Mirabello in Varese.
Doctor Barbara Pezzoni, PhD
Barbara Pezzoni graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Insubria. Following her interests cultivated for the dissertation, she continued her studies of History of Medicine, with specific competence in ergobiographies. She obtained a scholarship for the PhD in Clinical and Experimental Medicine and Medical Humanities at the University of Insubria. She collaborates with the Centre, focusing in particular on the History of Medicine and on the historical study of past diseases and medical treatments.
Doctor Chiara Rossetti, Specialist in Legal Medicine
Chiara Rossetti graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Insubria. She won the entrance exam to the Specialisation School in Legal Medicine at the University of Brescia, where she is majoring. She collaborates with the Centre in the study of osteoarchaeological findings, in particular in the application of identification methods of physical and forensic anthropology to the human remains retrieved on the archaeological sites.
